will 9 April 1816 proved 26 July 1816

In the Name of God Amen I WILLIAM ALDERSON of High Street , Borough, Southwark, being of sound mind memory and understanding do make and declare this to be my last will & Testament. I bequeath all my property real and personal to my executors for the purposes hereinafter named Vizt it is my Will that £4,000 be placed in the Bank of England within 6 months after the date of my decease and that the Interest thereof be paid to my dear Wife MARTHA ALDERSON during her natural life and at her decease that the aforesaid £4,000 be equally divided between my Sons GEORGE and JOHN and my daughter MARTHA ALDERSON
I likewise leave my dear Wife All my Plate Wearing Apparel and Household Furniture to be disposed of at her pleasure
I bequeath to my son GEORGE ALDERSON £1,500
I bequeath to my son JOHN ALDERSON £1,000
I bequeath to my daughter MARTHA ALDERSON if unmarried at the date of my decease £1,000
The above legacies to be paid as soon as convenient after my decease.
It is my will that the sum of £2,000 to be placed in the Bank of England and the Interest paid to my sons ROBERT WILLIAM and THOMAS ALDERSON in the following proportions vizt to ROBERT the Interest of £1,000, to WILLIAM and THOMAS the Interest of £500 each on the death of any one of them his share to be divided between the other two on the death of the second his share to fall to the third and on the death of the last the Capital to revert to my Estate and to be disposed of as directed for the residue
I hereby name constitute and appoint for my executors my dear Wife MARTHA ALDERSON my Son GEORGE ALDERSON and my Friend Mr JOHN HUNTER of Saint Martins Lane And it is my desire that the Stock in Trade Leases Goodwill and Fixtures and everything belonging to the houses No 313 Boro and No 5 Piccadilly (with the exception of the Furniture) and also my three houses at Barnard Castle be sold to the best advantage and as soon after my decease as convenient and that the residue of my Estate after providing for the payment of the above legacies and the payment of all just debts be equally divided between my sons GEORGE and JOHN and my daughter MARTHA ALDERSON In Witness whereof I have this 9 April 1816 subscribed my name hereto and sealed it with my seal

A Codicil to the Will of WILLIAM ALDERSON of High Street in the Borough of Southwark, Tailor and Draper, in explanation of my will dated 9 April 1816 First as to the Legacy of £4,000 to my Wife MARTHA I do direct that in case either of my said sons GEORGE and JOHN or my daughter MARTHA should happen to die during the lifetime of my said Wife leaving child or children then the share of such of my said two sons or daughter so dying shall go to their his or her Child or Children equally if more than one but in case either of my said two sons and daughter shall die in my said Wifes lifetime without leaving and child or children then the share of such one or more so dying shall go to the survivor of my said sons GEORGE and JOHN and my said daughter MARTHA in equal shares
I give to my son GEORGE £1,000 instead of £1,500 mentioned in my Will the like sum of £1,000 to my son JOHN The legacy of £1,000 to my daughter to be revoked she being now married and having received an equivalent
I devise to my son GEORGE my freehold Houses at Barnard Castle in the county of Durham to hold to him his heirs and assigns for ever
The Interest of £2,000 by my will directed to be invested in the Bank of England I direct to be paid to my sons ROBERT WILLIAM and THOMAS in the manner and proportions directed by my will Vizt the interest of £1,000 to my son ROBERT during his life & the interest of the other £1,000 to my sons WILLIAM and THOMAS during their lives in equal shares to be paid to them Quarterly with benefit of Survivorship during the lives or life or any or either of them and to revert and fall into the residue of my estate on the death of the Survivor and the residue of my estate I give to my said two sons GEORGE and JOHN and my daughter MARTHA equally
Executrix and executors are to be my Wife MARTHA ALDERSON my said son GEORGE ALDERSON and my Friend JOHN HUNTER of Saint Martins Lane and Mr ROBERT HESLOP of Little Newport Street, Haberdasher
I direct that in case my sons GEORGE and JOHN should feel disposed after my decease to carry on the Business now carried by me at my house in Southwark & in Piccadilly or either of then they shall be at liberty to do in which case they are to take my stock in trade subject to any diminution thereof which may be necessary for the purpose of raising any of the sums hereinbefore directed to be raised in case my other Personal estate should not be sufficient fort hat purpose at a fair valuation and shall be paid or accounted for by them by equal Instalments at four eight twelve and eighteen months form my decease
The above I publish as a Codicil to my Will this 10 July 1816
