Will of Aaron Arrowsmith

of St Anne, Soho, Westminster, Middlesex attested 16 Jan 1822

In the name of the Father Son and Holy Ghost three persons but one God I Aaron Arrowsmith hydrographer and geographer residing at No. 10 Soho Square in the county of Middlesex being in bodily health and of a perfectly sound and disposing mind knowing the certainty of death and of the uncertainty of the time when I shall answer to the summons do make this my last Will and testament
I desire that all my just debts funeral and testamentary charges and expences maybe paid out of the residue of my estate and effects herein after mentioned as soon as conveniently may be after my decease I do direct that my body may be buried in a plain decent manner to my nephew John Arrowsmith I give the sum of two hundred pounds
to Mr John Smith senior of Tyndall Place Islington in the county of Middlesex aforesaid I give the sum of fifty pounds and I direct that the said to legacies may be paid out of the residue of my estate and effects
to my wife Sarah Arrowsmith I give one annuity or yearly sum of one hundred pounds for and during the term of her life to be paid to her by four equal quarterly payments the first quarterly payment thereof to be paid to her at the end of three months next after my decease and I charge the same upon the residue of my estate and effects and I direct that my two sons Aaron and Samuel Arrowsmith hereinafter named or the survivor of them to pay the same amount annual sum of one hundred pounds to my said Wife as aforesaid
to my said wife Sarah Arrowsmith I give up one third equal part of all and singular my household goods household furniture beds bedding plate linen and china for her own use absolutely and I desire that two indifferent persons may be fixed upon after my decease for dividing and setting apart the same
I give to my said wife Sarah Arrowsmith the full use and occupation for the term of her life such of the two rooms as she may choose in my dwelling house in Soho Square aforesaid without paying any rent taxes or consideration for the same
to my said wife Sarah Arrowsmith I given bequeath the dividends and interest of one thousand and one hundred pounds three percent consols for the time of her life and from and after her decease I give the said one thousand and one hundred pounds three percent consols among such of the children of my said wife Sarah Arrowsmith as may be living at the time of her decease equally amongst them share and share alike but upon such trusts as our hereinafter mentioned of and concerning the respective shares given to them by this my will to my daughter Martha Bernays I give the dividends and interest of four hundred pounds three percent consols for the term of her life and after her decease I give the said sum of four hundred pounds three percent consols amongst each of her lawful issue as may be then living in equal shares and proportions
to my daughter Catherine Jane Hunt I give the dividends and interest of seven hundred pounds three percent consols for the term of her life and after her decease I give the said sum of seven hundred pounds three percent consols among such of her lawful issue as may be then living in equal shares and proportions
to my daughter Betsey Arrowsmith I give the dividends and interest of seven hundred pounds three percent consols for the term of her life and after her decease I give the said sum of seven hundred pounds three percent consols among such of the of her lawful issue as may be then living in equal shares and proportions
and in case of the death of either or any of my said daughters Martha, Catherine Jane or Betsey without leaving lawful issue then I give the dividends and interest of the shares of each of them as may die unto the survivors or survivor of my said daughters equally amongst them share and share alike but upon such trusts as are hereinafter declared of and concerning the said respective shares and in case of the death of all my said daughters Martha, Catherine Jane or Betsy without leaving lawful issue then I gave the said sum of four hundred pounds seven hundred pounds and seven hundred pounds three percent consols amongst such of my said children by my said wife Sarah Arrowsmith as may be then living share and share alike but as to the daughters respective shares upon such trusts as our hereinafter declared of and concerning the respective sums given to them respectively by this my will
to my daughter Priscilla Aerosmith I give the dividends and interest of seven hundred pounds three percent consols for the term of her life and after her decease I give the said sum of seven hundred pounds three percent consols amongst each of her lawful issue as may be then living in equal shares and proportions
to my daughter Catherine Sophia Arrowsmith I give the dividends and interest of seven hundred pounds three percent consols for the term of her life and after her decease I give the said sum of seven hundred pounds three percent consols amongst each of her lawful issue as may be then living in equal shares and proportions
to my daughter Caroline Arrowsmith I give the dividends and interest of seven hundred pounds three percent consols for the term of her life and after her decease I give the said sum of seven hundred pounds three percent consols amongst each of her lawful issue as may be then living in equal shares and proportions
and in case of the death of either or any of my said daughters Priscilla, Catherine Sophia and Caroline without leaving lawful issue then I give the dividends and interest of the shares of each of them as may die unto the survivors or survivor of my said daughters Priscilla, Catherine Sophia and Caroline equally amongst them share and share alike but on such trusts as a hereintofore declared of and concerning their said respective shares and it is my will and mind and I do hereby declare and direct that the said respective dividends and shares hereintofore given to my said respective daughters I was aforesaid shall not be subject to our answerable or accountable for the debts or any agreements under the control of any husband or husbands which they or any of them may be hereafter marry and that the receipt or receipts alone of my said respective daughters whether covert or sole shall be sufficient discharges to my executors and Trustees hereinafter named for so much money are such receipts shall express to have been received
to my two sons Aaron and Samuel Arrowsmith I give and bequeath all and each of the copper plates of my charts and maps engraved as also those which may be in a state of engraving or which I may have procured for the purpose of the engraving and also my printing press with all the apparatus thereunto belonging and also all and each of the impressions printed from the above together with all the blank paper which may remain imprinted and also all and each of my printed and manuscript books charts maps drawings plans etc engraved or not engraved and also all and each of my mathematical and other instruments of various descriptions including two clocks and a pocket watch and also all my estate interest and tenns of years in the two leases which I now hold of my house No 10 in Soho Square I feel sad and also all the remaining two third parts of all and singular my household goods household furniture beds bedding plate linen and china and also all my book and outstanding debts and all other the residue and remainder of my estate and effects of war to nurture or description the same maybe and yet hereinbefore particularly disposed of to hold the same and every part thereof unto my said two sons Aaron and Samuel Arrowsmith equally between them share and share alike and subject to and chargeable with the bequests in this my will
I appoint my said wife Sarah Arrowsmith and the said John Smith senior executrix executor and Trustees of this my will and hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made I publish and declare this to be my last will and testament as witness my hand and seal the sixteenth day of January one thousand eight hundred and twenty two

Signed sealed published and declared by the said Aaron Arrowsmith the testator as that and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other we subscribe to our names as witnesses the word just in the line [?] and the words hereinafter named or the survivor of them into lined in the 23rd line of the first side having been respectively first noticed

As a Codicil to my will this seventh day of March one thousand eight hundred and twenty three farther bequeath to my wife Sarah Arrowsmith all the money which I leave in my house at my decease to the amount of tenor twelve hundred pounds or if more I leave it all to her signed on the day of the above date by me

16 May 1823, Ottiwell Robinson attested that the Codicil to the Will was in the handwriting of Aaron Arrowsmith, saying that he was well acquainted with his writing.
